In August 2022, most of our financial activity revolved around our wedding, which was scheduled for August 2023. One of the major decisions we made was opening a new credit card that offered great rewards for travel. The plan was to put all of our wedding-related expenses on this card, as long as there were no extra fees for using a credit card. As we paid for various wedding costs, we could rack up points and use them to cover a good chunk of our honeymoon expenses.
The key to this strategy was discipline—we didn’t overspend just to accumulate more points. We stuck to our wedding budget and simply took advantage of the rewards from the purchases we were already planning to make. One significant expense we couldn’t put on the credit card was the down payment for our wedding venue. To secure our venue, we had to pay half of the anticipated cost upfront, which effectively wiped out the extra money we had saved for the wedding up to that point.
