July 2023 will go down as one of the most chaotic and memorable months we’ve experienced as a couple so far. It was a month filled with big milestones, exciting progress, and—of course—a few unwelcome surprises.
On the upside, we were just days away from our wedding and busy wrapping up the final details. We made the last payment to the venue, finalized the guest list, and began the countdown to the big day. Amid all that excitement, we also welcomed our very first tenant into the duplex. Signing a one-year lease was a huge win, as it meant we were now sharing the cost of housing and easing some financial pressure. To top it off, the stock market had another strong month, which gave our investment accounts a nice boost and added to the general feeling of forward momentum.
But not everything went according to plan. Just days after our tenant moved in, a major plumbing issue was discovered on their side of the duplex. After having a plumber assess the situation, it became clear that the fix would be extensive—we had to dig underneath the bathroom and part of the kitchen to address the issue properly. Insurance helped cover the costs, but the final bill still reached into the five figures, and repairs took several weeks to complete. Thankfully, our tenant was patient throughout the process and ultimately decided to stay. Still, juggling wedding planning and a major home repair at the same time tested our patience, energy, and time management like never before.
Looking back, July was a whirlwind. But despite the stress, it reinforced our teamwork, and we came out of it with a wedding around the corner, a tenant in place, and another chapter of homeownership experience under our belts.
